Description
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE STRIPES IN THE PHOTO RESULT FROM A FAULTY SCANNER AND DO NOT APPEAR ON THE BOOK ITSELF. “THE COLLECTORS ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF ENGLISH CERAMICS” by BERNARD AND THERLE HUGHES was first published in 1968 and has become a CLASSIC STANDARD WORK on this subject.   In LARGE FORMAT HARDBACK, and COMPLETE WITH IT’S ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET, this book is now out of print, and becoming increasingly rare and sought after.   Nobody interested in ENGLISH CERAMICS will want to be without an edition of this classic book, particularly as this book is in overall VERY GOOD CONDITION!   The authors wear their vast learning lightly ; they discuss intricacies of design and decoration with such zest and happy good sense that the reader is never bored or excluded through technical ignorance.   An old earthenware teapot, a china lustre jug, a cup in translucent porcelain — who has not found himself suddenly wondering who made it, and when?   Perhaps it bears a mark — whose mark? Perhaps it is just a modern imitation, and even a cursory knowledge of materials and processes would reveal this — if one could call upon that knowledge.   Accepting the fact that most people look first for the unreliable assistance of initials or other mark, the authors have supplied these extremely comprehensively in their alphabetical places.   But the maker's name and period are only the beginning of the story. The piece may be of pottery or stoneware, bone china or porcelain, to mention only a few of the possibilities.   It may be painted in enamel colours or transfer-printed, or both; sprigged with relief ornament or enriched with any of several lustre processes. Glaze and gilding are fascinating, complex studies that aid in placing a problem piece.   Each of these subjects has its own clear-cut detailed references in this book, heavy type indicating where further information may be sought. Always the aim has been to make matters simple, straightforward, factual.   In particular, early nineteenth century bone china is finding favour and here receives invaluable clarification.   But the book covers the full range of ceramics, from food warmers to flower bouquets, from eggshell porcelain to ironstone china, from the dates of registration marks to the individual border patterns used by   makers of Staffordshire blue-and-white.   Perhaps best of all are the superb diagrams and black and white photographs which compliment the informative and entertaining text perfectly.   The book itself is in overall VERY GOOD condition.   The dust jacket is in Good condition. There is creasing, chipping and tearing to the dust jacket extremities but the damage has been neatly repaired where possible. However some areas of still exist, particularly to the top of the spine. That having been said, the dust jacket is not clipped and remains reasonably BRIGHT AND ATTRACTIVE (see photo).    The blue spine and boards, whilst bumped and showing light signs of rubbing and shelf wear, are in EXCELLENT CONDITION, being BRIGHT, UNMARKED and perfectly attached to each other and to the book itself.   Internally, the book is IMMACULATE. There are NO INSCRIPTIONS OR MARKINGS OF ANY SORT and all the pages and illustrative plates are UNMARKED and ATTRACTIVE. The book remains VERY TIGHTLY BOUND - all of the pages and the ILLUSTRATIONS are present and correct.   Perhaps best of all, this RARE book is being offered with NO RESERVE ; it is an opportunity which no one interested in this fascinating subject will want to be without!   Payment in £ Sterling only. UK buyers to pay by Paypal, Postal Order, Cheque or Bankers Draft (UK banks only). Overseas buyers to pay by Paypal only. As usual, buyers to pay postage packing and handling (PPH). UK PPH will be £4.75. Overseas postage to be confirmed.   Please note that I accept no responsibility for any loss or damage arising from the postal service. Accordingly, please consider using Recorded Delivery or Insurance (at extra cost).   Please email me if you have any queries.   Thank you for your interest
